a few bumps and bruises along the way

Are you ready for this one? I haven't posted since before our move, so I have lots to say. I just haven't had the time to say it.
First, moving all of our crap took 14 hours and two completely full truck loads. Where did all of this stuff come from?! I knew we had a lot, but...man. All I have to say is that Kyle has the best friends in the world, and my family rocks. If it weren't for all of them, we'd still be moving. If anyone is ever thinking of moving with young kids--don't. It's not fun. I guess people do it all of the time, but how they stay sane I'll never know.
We don't quite have the storage we used to so most of our time is spent not unpacking, but trying to be creative of where to put all of this stuff. A few arguments over man vs woman style doesn't help either.
The upside is that every time I look around I can't believe that this is our house. I can't believe that we are living our dream of living in an old house with character (lots of it) on 1.5 acres. I can't believe there is a 2000 cow dairy farm a half mile from us. BUT the lake is 15 steps from us, too. So, we're hoping that country air only comes around once in a while and mostly we will be smelling the lake air.
We already picked some apples and pears from our trees in the back yard. They need some TLC, but I'm hoping that I'll be able to do some canning next year. I'm so Betty Crocker. I feel like a pro even though I've only made strawberry jam--once--with help. I'm determined to be a farm girl! You would think with all of the fruit around that the mice would be happy with that, but no, they want to get into our home. Yes, I saw one little Stewart running across our kitchen floor. Haven't heard from him in a while so maybe he found the apples :) We were just so relieved that it wasn't a ghost that I almost hugged the mouse. The set up of our house is really different in that the kids' rooms are downstairs and ours is upstairs. We have the monitor set up in between the rooms and kept hearing banging and crazy noises at night. We set up our own super sleuth traps (apparently mice eat flour, too) but have never caught anything. The exterminator is coming on Thursday to school me on animal proofing our house. Should be interesting.
I have a nice, long winter to get everything just where we want it to be, so in the meantime I will do a little here and there, but mostly I'm just going to enjoy this time with my kids.
I just thought this picture was so cute. Kyle is living it up as farm boy--having a blast riding the tractor lawn mower, enjoying the friendly neighbors, etc. The farmer (the real one) across the street was doing whatever farmers do to their farms on a real tractor, so Kyle was pointing it out. I wanted to capture the moment and also prove to all of you who don't believe that I really live out in the boonies, but of course the tractor was behind the tree as I snapped the pic.
